Nanofiche is a novel analog archival preservation medium that surpasses the limitations of current technologies. Nickel-based Nanofiche doesn't degrade and doesn't need replacement, unlike other options. It endures electromagnetic radiation, high heat, extreme cold, exposure to the elements, microbes, and many types of chemicals without oxidizing and with no half-life for thousands of years or more on Earth.

Each square centimeter of Nanofiche can store up to 2,000 analog pages of text at 150 dpi. For instance, a 20 x 20 mm nickel Nanofiche sheet can hold up to 8,000 pages of text at 150 dpi. At this resolution, a letter-size Nanofiche page can hold up to 1.2 million analog images and pages of text!

If the content to be preserved has photographs, the output must be rendered at double the resolution (300 dpi) to reduce pixelation and enhance image quality. Since photographs are rendered to Nanofiche in grayscale diffusion dithers, it effectively decreases the capacity to 300,000 analog images per letter-size sheet of Nanofiche from 1.2 million images.

Nanofiche primarily stores data in analog format but can also be used to encode digital data for archival preservation, either as analog images of digital bitmaps or in native digital formats (such as DVD format). It's also worth noting that at 600 dpi, Nanofiche can still hold an impressive 150,000 analog images of pages and photos per single 8.5" x 11" sheet.

What are the specifications for Nickel Nanofiche?

Nickel Nanofiche is a cutting-edge technology that utilizes deep blue laser technology to optically reduce to a 100nm focus point. With a lithographic speed of 1,000 pages per minute, text at 0.003 point size can be printed, with each character measuring at 1 micron, or the size of a bacillus bacterium. The pages are so small that a single sheet of Nanofiche, measuring 8.5 inches by 11 inches, can fit up to 1.2 million pages of 200 dpi images or text. To create the Nanofiche, the master is first written to glass at an astounding 300,000 dpi and is then electro deposited into nickel. Elemental nickel has a melting point of 2,651 F and has been environmentally tested for its ability to withstand high temperatures of up to 570 F. In fact, Los Alamos discovered no degradation even after the longest test time of 65 hours as measured by SEM at 20,000X. The longevity of engraved content on Nickel Nanofiche is expected to last billions of years if left undisturbed, making it an ideal storage medium for outer space. On the surface of the Moon, we project a lifespan of 50 million years or longer, depending on how it is protected. On Earth's surface, the engraved content is expected to last at least 10,000 years, and potentially millions of years if buried below the surface.

Who invented Nanofiche?

Nanofiche is a new medium, that is only supplied by a single vendor. Nanofiche is a patented, proprietary product of Stamper Technology, under license from NanoIP. The technology underlying Nanofiche is based on the inventions and technology of Bruce Ha, a senior research scientist who invented the technology for PictureCD technology while at Kodak.

Bruce Ha is a successful entrepreneur inventor with a career spanning 40 years in the information storage industry. He has founded and led six startup companies, and has worked with major corporations such as Kodak, Pioneer, and Raytheon. Bruce's inventions include the most permanent and longest lasting archival medium known to man, holographic security and authentication technology, and the first 30-million-page Lunar Library placed on the moon in 2019. He is also the Chief Scientist of the Arch Mission, working to archive humanity for the next 10,000 years or longer. Bruce is an alumnus of USC with two degrees in Engineering and one in Business, and holds numerous patents for high-level security holographic features and ultra-long-term storage technologies.
